We would like to let residents know about an energy efficiency program that’s currently going on in Oregon. Lighting is often a significant portion of electricity use, and by switching to LED bulbs, small business owners could reduce their energy usage (and energy bills!).

Currently, incentive programs from the Energy Trust of Oregon are offering 50-100% incentives for small businesses that want to upgrade their lighting from fluorescent to LED. However, these incentives change frequently, and will be phased out in January 2025. Sometimes incentive funding runs out before the end of the year, too. Oregon will be implementing a ban on some types of fluorescent lighting in 2025, so incentive programs will end when the ban begins. Instead of waiting for the stick, take the carrot now! For McMinnville residents, Mac Water & Light has their own rebates and can cover up to 52% of LED upgrade projects for commercial and industrial customers.

If you do choose to go through an Energy Trust incentive program, be aware that any products purchased must be installed within 90 days of purchase. Energy Trust can also send inspectors to ensure that new lighting has been installed. They have a list of eligible contractors available on their website.

Finally, when removing fluorescent lights, be careful! These products need to be recycled appropriately, as they contain a small amount of mercury. As long as the bulbs are intact, this mercury poses no threat to human or animal health, but if the bulbs break it can be released into the environment. Find an appropriate recycling center here.
