Policeman’s helmet is native to India and western Himalaya. It was brought to the PNW as an ornamental.

Why is it important to control?

This plant forms dense stands in riparian areas and moist lowlands, excluding native forbs.

How can you identify it?

Habitat: Moist areas near streams, lakes, rivers or riparian areas.
Life Cycle: Annual
Height: Up to 8 feet
Leaf Description: Lance-shaped leaves have toothed edges. Leaves grow opposite or in whorls of three.
Fruit & Flower Description: Solitary white to pink flowers.
Bloom Time: June to October

How do you control it?

  • Manually removing small patches works well. Dispose of plant material in a tied plastic bag in the trash.

  • Oregon Department of Agriculture has no approved biocontrols.
