The District has started a book & film club with McMinnville Public Library!
The next meeting will be on April 15th at 6pm, in the Carnegie Room. This meeting will be a little different than previous months — based on interest from the group last month and in other conversations with local residents recently, we’ll be using the book club as a time to start considering restoration and native planting plans to use at home. In the spirit of this idea, instead of suggesting a single book for everyone to read, we have several suggestions that can be found at the library or for free online:
- Northwest Home Landscaping by Roger Holmes (book)
- Gardening With Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest by Arthur Kruckeberg (book)
- Encyclopedia of Northwest Native Plants for Gardens and Landscapes by Kathleen Robson (book)
- A Way To Garden by Margaret Roach (podcast)
- The Evergreen Thumb by Washington State University Master Gardeners (podcast)
- Native Plant Picks for Bees from OSU Extension (article)
- Firewise Landscaping Checklist from Oregon.gov (article)
- Drought-Tolerant Garden by Over the Fence Landscape Tours (video)
- Container Gardening by Growing in the Garden (video)
- Or anything else you may find of interest related to landscaping and gardening in the Pacific Northwest (the library has lots of options!)
The above list is not all-encompassing, it’s just meant to give you some ideas. If you find yourself struggling to find exactly what you’re looking for, feel free to contact district Outreach & Education Specialist Brooke Karasch at [email protected] for research help. While the district focuses quite a bit on native plants, don’t feel that you have to limit your own goals to only native plants. This will be a collaborative conversation about how we can best support a wide variety of landscape goals in the county!
We encourage all who are interested to attend. Don’t feel like you need to a read a book cover-to-cover this month; take some time to assess your space, consider what your goals might be, and then look through some books or other materials to spark creative ideas.
Future books and documentaries will be decided by the group, so come with options for what you’d like to discuss next!
