The Oregon Department of Agriculture has issued a recall for Signature Pet Care Songbird Mix, sold at Albertson’s, Safeway, and Haggen in Oregon and Washington. The seed mix contains Palmer Amaranth, which is an invasive species that has already been detected in two counties in Oregon (Marion and Malheur Counties). A single plant can produce hundreds of thousands of seeds, so it has the potential to spread very quickly if it gets a foothold in Oregon.

Bird Seed

Albertson’s, Safeway, and Haggen stores have already removed the product from their shelves voluntarily. However, if you purchased this seed mix before it was pulled from shelves, please take the following steps:

  • Remove any remaining seed from bird feeders
  • Return any unused seed to the store for a refund
  • Double-bag and dispose of any loose seed in the trash — do not compost
  • Inspect areas near and under bird feeders for sprouted weeds, carefully remove any plants, and dispose of them in the trash
