Why is it important to control?

Italian arum spreads rapidly and is difficult to control. It is toxic to both people and pets.

How can you identify it?

Habitat: Wet to moist habitats including forests, yards, riparian areas and wetlands.
Life Cycle: Perennial
Height: Up to 1.5 feet
Leaf Description: Waxy and arrowhead-shaped. Dark green with white stripes.
Fruit & Flower Description: Flowers are greenish-white and hood-like. Berries orange-red.
Bloom Time: March to June

How do you control it?

  • Manually removing Italian arum is not recommended except for really small infestations. Wear gloves when handling.

  • At a minimum, cut and bag the berry clusters in August, before the seeds have a chance to spread.
