Join us to explore the basics of dry farming\, its successful application in Oregon\, and the innovative work of the Dry Farming Institute. Learn how small farmers across the West are adopting water-resilient strategies\, and discover valuable resources and opportunities to dive deeper into dry farming. \nSpecial Presentation: Dry Farming In the Willamette ValleyPresented by: Amy Garrett\, Dry Farming Institute Co-Director \nAmy Garrett is Co-Director and Director of Operations at the Dry Farming Institute (DFI)\,  a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to empowering growers to thrive with less water. Drought mitigation tools and strategies for growing with little or no irrigation have become a focus in her work in the past decade. She worked with OSU Extension Small Farms Program in the Southern Willamette Valley 2011-2022\, where she initiated the OSU Dry Farming Project in 2014\, the Dry Farming Collaborative in 2016\, and founded the Dry Farming Institute in 2019. As Director of Operations\, she is excited to help build capacity for DFI and maintain a work culture that emphasizes transparency\, communication\, innovation\, and collaboration.  DFI supports growers’ exploration of water resilient agricultural practices through collaborative projects\, outreach\, and education. SUMMARY:Conservation Book & Film Club
DESCRIPTION:The District is starting a new book & film club with McMinnville Public Library! This book club will run from November through March. \nOur first meeting will be November 19th at 6 pm. Our first book will be Beyond the War on Invasive Species:\nA Permaculture Approach to Ecosystem Restoration by Willamette Valley author Tao Orion. The library system\nhas a couple of copies of the book available for checkout. It is also available from the publisher\,\nChelsea Green Publishing\, or from retailers like Third Street Books\, Thriftbooks\, AbeBooks\, and Powell Books.\nAlways look around and see where you can find the best deals\, and support your local bookstores! \nIf you don’t have time to read an entire book\, but would still like to attend\, please do! There’s a short article here on a similar topic that can also serve as a conversation starter. \nFuture books and documentaries will be decided by the group\, so come with options for what you’d like to discuss next! Options could include The Re-Origin of Species: A Second Chance for Extinct Animals by Torill Kornfeldt\, The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession by Amy Stewart\, or The Last Animal by Ramona Ausubel for a fictional option. These are a just a few options available through the library catalog\, but please bring your own to-read or to-watch lists for additional ideas!

DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone! \nRegistration for the McMinnville Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event is now open! \nThe event will be held: Saturday\, September 28th\, 2024 at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds from 9am-2pm. Registration is required! \nPlease review the list of HHW items that can be recycled locally year round (especially if you have household batteries\, rechargeable batteries\, paint\, compact fluorescent light bulbs– you may be able to recycle them before the event and not need to attend!): https://www.yamhillcounty.gov/377/Local-HHW-Recycling-Spots \n  \nIf you plan to attend the collection event on September 28th\, please remember: \n\nRegistration is required. Once registered\, you will receive a confirmation email from SignUp Genius (check your inbox or junk mail).\nPlease do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your selected time.  These appointments are scheduled at a specific rate of cars per every 15 minutes for safe and efficient unloading.\nIf you arrive earlier than 10 minutes before the time that was selected\, you will be asked to return at the correct time.\n\nOther Recycling Events/Places: \n\nRecycling at Staples Stores:  Staples is now offering recycling for many common household items including- rechargeable batteries\, single use batteries\, ink cartridges\, CD/DVD disc & players\, various electronics\, school supplies such as pens/pencils\, binders\, etc.  There is a large list of accepted items that can be found here: https://www.staples.com/stores/recycling#rec\n\n Contact the local McMinnville Staples store at (503) 474-0403 for participating items and questions. \n\nPlastic Recycling Event & Styrofoam! DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center for Harvest Fest! Harvest Fest is August 17th and 18th this year; from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday the 17th and 12 pm – 4 pm on Sunday the 18th. \nThere will be stagecoach rides\, a petting zoo\, demonstrations of crops harvested with antique equipment\, music\, food\, and more! Yamhill SWCD will be present both days with free seed paper that you can plant at home to grow wildflowers. \nTickets are $8 per person and will be available at the gate. SUMMARY:Pollinator BioBlitz for Pollinator Week
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place at on June 22nd\, 2024 from 2-4 pm Miller Woods. We will start from the kiosk station. This will be a casual event where we try to find and identify pollinators for Pollinator Week! Feel free to come and go as suits your schedule. We would love to contribute to citizen science projects by posting observations to iNaturalist and Bumble Bee Watch during the event. We will discuss what pollinators are\, some tips for how to photograph them\, and where you might be likely to see them at Miller Woods. We will also discuss how to use iNaturalist and Bumble Bee Watch\, and the value of citizen science! \nKeep in mind that this event will be held outdoors. Bring anything you would normally bring for a hike — water\, sunscreen\, etc. Please also bring a charged cell phone\, ideally with iNaturalist already downloaded (we will use a web browser to upload photos to Bumble Bee Watch). Pollinator activity is weather-dependent\, so while we hope for a warm\, sunny day to see insect activity\, be aware that cold\, rainy\, or cloudy weather is likely to result in fewer observations. \nPlease join us to learn about pollinators and contribute to citizen science during Pollinator Week!
