DESCRIPTION:The District has a book club with McMinnville Public Library! This book club will run from October through March. \nThe next meeting will be on December 16th at 6pm\, in the Carnegie Room at the McMinnville Public Library. And even if you don’t do any of those things — please attend if you’re interested! We always have great conversations and everyone is an important part of it. \nFuture books and documentaries will be decided by the group\, so come with options for what you’d like to discuss next!

SUMMARY:Cover Crop Field Tour
DESCRIPTION:We will hear from OSU researchers about preliminary results of new research on the impacts of cover crops on soil and orchard health. Speakers include: farmers Jeff Newton and Zach Christensen\, Dragomira Zheleva\, whose research focuses on water availability and water retention in the soil both with and without cover crops; Chris Lessey\, whose research is related to moderating soil temperature with cover crops; Matt Tippet-Vannini\, whose research investigates the relationship between cover crops and water infiltration. OSU Professor Shannon Cappellazzi will touch on cover crop effects on soil health and Natalie Edward with NRCS will demonstrate differences in management practices on water infiltration and erosion with a rain simulation system. \nAnyone with an interest in cover crops should attend! While we will be in a hazelnut orchard\, and learning about research conducted primarily in hazelnuts\, cover crops can be used in a wide variety of agricultural and even home garden contexts. We hope to see you there! \nDetailed directions and parking instructions will be provided to attendees one week prior to the event. \nThis is a free event organized by Polk SWCD\, Yamhill SWCD\, Oregon State University\, and NRCS. Coffee and snacks will be provided. Registration is required. \nRegister Online Here

SUMMARY:Perseid Party
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a rare after-dark event at Miller Woods! Normally\, Miller Woods is closed after sunset… But this is a special opportunity to see Miller Woods at night\, and hopefully see some meteors as well! \nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is an annual meteor shower that comes around each August. The year\, the peak night is August 12th. We will still have a 3/4 moon\, but hopefully we will be able to spot a few meteors before the moonrise! \nThere is no cost for this event\, but we do appreciate donations to Miller Woods to keep the space up and running. The suggested donation “entry fee” is $5. It’s thanks to contributions from park visitors that we’re able to maintain Miller Woods as a public space! \nThis event will also include brief educational presentations by volunteers from Oregon Dark Sky and the Carlton Observatory. \nMake a Donation to Miller WoodsRegister Online Here

SUMMARY:Paddle & Pull with Willamette Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Join Willamette Riverkeeper\, Yamhill Soil & Water Conservation District\, and Oregon Parks & Recreation Department for the third “Paddle & Pull” event of the summer. Come spend the day with us to paddle a beautiful Willamette River side channel from Ediger Landing to Grand Island Greenway and help hand-pull aquatic invasive species Ludwigia (water-primrose)\, Myriophyllum aquaticum (parrotfeather)\, and more. These aquatic weeds continue to degrade fish & wildlife habitat in our rivers and have negative impacts on our native vegetation\, water quality and the overall watershed health. This is an on-water event\, so experience on moving water is recommended. We have ten tandem canoes (20 seats) for volunteers. If you’d like to borrow one for the day you MUST SELECT this option in the “Add On” section of registration. Reserve a seat\, and make a new friend! \nThere are kayaks available for up to 20 participants\, so make sure you sign up today to reserve your spot! \nRegister Online HereLearn more about Water PrimroseSee Project HighlightsLearn more about Garden Yellow Loosestrife

SUMMARY:April Conservation Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The District has started a book & film club with McMinnville Public Library! \nThe next meeting will be on April 15th at 6pm\, in the Carnegie Room. This meeting will be a little different than previous months — based on interest from the group last month and in other conversations with local residents recently\, we’ll be using the book club as a time to start considering restoration and native planting plans to use at home. In the spirit of this idea\, instead of suggesting a single book for everyone to read\, we have several suggestions that can be found at the library or for free online: \n\nNorthwest Home Landscaping by Roger Holmes (book)\nGardening With Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest by Arthur Kruckeberg (book)\nEncyclopedia of Northwest Native Plants for Gardens and Landscapes by Kathleen Robson (book)\nA Way To Garden by Margaret Roach (podcast)\nThe Evergreen Thumb by Washington State University Master Gardeners (podcast)\nNative Plant Picks for Bees from OSU Extension (article)\nFirewise Landscaping Checklist from Oregon.gov (article)\nDrought-Tolerant Garden by Over the Fence Landscape Tours (video)\nContainer Gardening by Growing in the Garden (video)\nOr anything else you may find of interest related to landscaping and gardening in the Pacific Northwest (the library has lots of options!)\n\nThe above list  is not all-encompassing\, it’s just meant to give you some ideas. If you find yourself struggling to find exactly what you’re looking for\, feel free to contact district Outreach & Education Specialist Brooke Karasch at brooke@yamhillswcd.org for research help. While the district focuses quite a bit on native plants\, don’t feel that you have to limit your own goals to only native plants. This will be a collaborative conversation about how we can best support a wide variety of landscape goals in the county! \nWe encourage all who are interested to attend. Don’t feel like you need to a read a book cover-to-cover this month; take some time to assess your space\, consider what your goals might be\, and then look through some books or other materials to spark creative ideas. \nFuture books and documentaries will be decided by the group\, so come with options for what you’d like to discuss next!

SUMMARY:Conservation Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The District has started a book & film club with McMinnville Public Library! This book club will run from November through March. \nThe next meeting will be on March 18th at 6pm\, in the Carnegie Room. The February book will be The Once and Future World: Finding Wilderness in the Nature We’ve Made by J.B. MacKinnon. The library system has a couple of copies of the book available for checkout. Always look around and see where you can find the best deals if you’d like to purchase a copy\, and support your local bookstores and libraries! \nWe encourage all who are interested to attend. If you don’t have time to read the book\, the author also wrote an article about dam removal on the Klamath River that could spark conversations! If you’re more of a podcast listener than a reader\, he was also interviewed on the Ethical Agriculture Podcast about one of his other books\, exploring the topic of local food. \nFuture books and documentaries will be decided by the group\, so come with options for what you’d like to discuss next! Although the March date was initially intended to be the last book club before we all start spending our evenings outside in the warmer weather\, we will also discuss possibly moving the time and continuing the book club year-round.
