SUMMARY:Cover Crop Field Tour
DESCRIPTION:We will hear from OSU researchers about preliminary results of new research on the impacts of cover crops on soil and orchard health. Speakers include: farmers Jeff Newton and Zach Christensen\, Dragomira Zheleva\, whose research focuses on water availability and water retention in the soil both with and without cover crops; Chris Lessey\, whose research is related to moderating soil temperature with cover crops; Matt Tippet-Vannini\, whose research investigates the relationship between cover crops and water infiltration. OSU Professor Shannon Cappellazzi will touch on cover crop effects on soil health and Natalie Edward with NRCS will demonstrate differences in management practices on water infiltration and erosion with a rain simulation system. \nAnyone with an interest in cover crops should attend! While we will be in a hazelnut orchard\, and learning about research conducted primarily in hazelnuts\, cover crops can be used in a wide variety of agricultural and even home garden contexts. We hope to see you there! \nDetailed directions and parking instructions will be provided to attendees one week prior to the event. \nThis is a free event organized by Polk SWCD\, Yamhill SWCD\, Oregon State University\, and NRCS. Coffee and snacks will be provided. Registration is required. \nRegister Online Here

SUMMARY:Habitat & Harvest Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Habitat & Harvest is Yamhill Soil & Water Conservation District’s new urban habitat program. The two goals are to improve biodiversity and food security in Yamhill County. \nRichard Hoffman has graciously agreed to host a tour of his space and share his vast knowledge of native plants\, invasive species\, and more. Join us for an inspirational afternoon! \nTopics will include blackberry removal\, “opportunistic native plants”\, and native species. There will likely be some spring-blooming native plants in bloom\, but given the unusually mild winter this year\, it’s challenging to predict which ones. Some might include kurabayashi trillium\, several different fawn lilies\, western wallflower\, and shooting stars. \nRegistration is required. Each person must register individually. The address will be provided to registered attendees two days before the event. SUMMARY:Perseid Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second annual Perseid Party! \nThis is a fun\, family-friendly evening outdoors. We saw a few meteors last year\, and we hope to see more this year! The party is scheduled for the peak night of the Perseid Meteor Shower\, and we have a new moon too\, so viewing should be excellent. We will be joined by Carlton Observatory\, who will add to the fun with a telescope or two! \nWhat To Bring: \n\nWear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. We won’t be walking far\, but terrain is uneven.\nWater bottle and snack if you’d like one\nBug spray\nBlanket or something to sit or lie on\nHeadlamp\, ideally one with a red light setting (it is easier for your eyes to readjust to darkness after red light than other types of light\, which will help for star and meteor viewing)\n\nThis event is free\, but Miller Woods and Carlton Observatory are both supported by donations. \nLearn More about Miller Woods MembershipsLearn More about Carlton ObservatoryThe Perseid Party registration is full for this year. This will be an annual event\, so check back next year! And check out the other night programs Carlton Observatory runs!

SUMMARY:Harvest Exchange & Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The District has quite a plan for October 3rd from 10AM – 1PM! Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy Miller Woods. \nPlant Sale \n\nCome get your plant fix and get some new plants in the ground before the winter rains.\nWe will have a variety of native plants available for sale!\n\nHarvest Exchange \n\nThis year\, we are teaming up with Edible Landscapes of Yamhill County and their annual Fall Harvest Exchange! If you have extra fruits or veggies\, bring them to trade or donate.\nEdible Landscapes is also bringing their ever-popular apple cider press! Enjoy some non-alcoholic cider while you peruse the veggies and native plants.\nSwap your preserved foods\, too! Jams\, jellies\, canned salsa\, pickled veggies… Whatever you have too much of\, bring by for a trade. Note that we have not inspected any kitchens\, swap at your own risk.\nPick up a pumpkin! Early October is plenty of time to carve and enjoy your pumpkin before Halloween. Pumpkins are priced by size\, and all proceeds go to support Edible Landscapes and their mission of improving food security in Yamhill County\, one garden at a time.\n\nSeed Swap \n\nBring your seeds and trade with friends\, old and new\, at the seed swap!\nPlease bring your seeds in a labeled container/envelope.\nWe will have some envelopes available for you to use to take new seeds home\, but you’re welcome to bring your own.\nNative plant seeds and edible plant seeds are welcome\, but no invasive species please!\nThe seed swap is free at the discretion of people who bring seeds.\nUnfortunately\, we are unable to guarantee the seeds at the seed swap. It’s impossible for us to completely keep track of who is bringing what\, if the seeds in the container are labeled accurately\, or the age/viability of the seeds. Participation in the seed swap is at your own risk.\n\nCommunity Partners \n\nOutdoor Education Adventures\nFriends of the Library\nYamhill County Master Gardeners\n…and more!

SUMMARY:Conservation Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The District book club is back! There are a couple of changes this year. We will be meeting at Miller Woods\, in the conference room if the weather is bad or out on the porch if the weather is nice (we could even walk and talk if we want!). \nThis book club will run from October through March. Check out the full list of upcoming books! \nThe first meeting of this season will be on October 18th at 2pm in Miller Woods conference room. The book of the month is Is A River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane. The local library system has a few copies\, and always check local bookshops if you’d like to purchase a copy! \nWe encourage all who are interested to attend\, even if you haven’t read the book. If you’d prefer\, you can listen to a podcast with the author\, read a shorter article on a similar topic\, or check out a video from Follow The Water. \nAnd even if you don’t do any of those things — please attend if you’re interested! We always have great conversations and everyone is an important part of it. \nWe are adding a virtual option this year. In person attendance is great\, but if you’d rather join us virtually\, please use this link: https://meet.google.com/gmq-mhhp-ibp
